Although he has taught all levels and grades of high school English over the course of his career, he was an Advanced Placement English teacher almost exclusively for the last 25 years, so he has seen the changes in testing and course philosophy over time.
He began scoring AP exams in 1992 (first in Literature, then in Language) and worked as a table leader from 2005 to 2012, his last year at the Reading.
Greetings, Welcome to the summer institute for AP English Language and Composition.
If you are new to this course, then prepare yourself for a new perspective to traditional literary approaches (See attached agenda).
To that end, students examine and discuss non-fiction works of various types and themes, summarizing who is being addressed, what is being said, how the idea is being presented and why it is being said.
According to the AP English Language Course Description the exam strives to test reading and writing skills necessary for successful college careers and intellectual and civically responsible involvement in the world, as a whole.
Reading assignments should represent a clear rhetorical situation (e.g.
topical fiction), speak to one another through a variety of genres, offer various rhetorical devices, and challenge AP students to understand non-fiction writing.
The exam consists of 52 – 55 multiple-choice questions.
You have one hour to complete the multiple-choice section.
